The Longest Union Pacific Train - 1/10/10
3:10PM, 1/10/10 - Filmed at Maple Ave grade crossing, Montebello, CA. well, this is not my best shot though, post it here just for the record or who just want to see it. :P The longest/monster Union Pacific double stack/intermodal train headed for ICTF, Carson, CA. (nine locomotives, 500 plus containers) I heard this is just a test train, so you won't see this for everyday. Train IDILBF 08 with nine GE units : UP 7454, UP 7419, UP 7462, UP 7800, UP 5318, UP 7792, UP 7773, UP 7667, UP 7680, departed 10:00AM, 1/8/10, Dit, Texas for ICTF, Carson/Long Beach, California. (arrived ICTF 4:30PM, 1/10/10) According to the UP spokesman, this train is loaded, carried furniture, clothing, electronics and other goods for export.

We started on the bridge West of the station and finished at the station. 12:03AM- A UP ACE leads this container intermodal West and the engineer gives a few honks. DPUs have been pretty common on UP intermodal trains lately. I chased it from Oakland to Stockton, California, with a memorable and historical meet at Hearst with Southen Pacific 4-6-2 #2472 and Robert Dollar Tank Engine #3. There will be a sequel to this video with all the extra railroad activities that happened during the chase.

This doesn't have much to do with ham radio but it was great day. At Friday morning's coffee gathering with my ham buddies they mentioned that the big Union Pacific 844 steam engine would be passing through Colfax CA during lunch time. Colfax is about 20 minutes from Grass Valley, so off I went. Many hams chase trains, and there were a bunch following this train today. They use 146.49 to pass train spotting information. I had my scanner with rail and 146.49 frequencies with me. My HT was home. I only had my digital still camera, which also does movies. It was neat being about 3 feet away from the train as it passed through. The ground rumbles! Lionel Union Pacific FEF
Here is a video of a Lionel Union Pacific FEF going around the Christmas Tree. Lionel did an excellent job with this locomotive and it operates as well as it both looks and sounds. The train is made up of reefer cars from Atlas O, Lionel, MTH Electric Trains, and Weaver Models. Behind the reefer cars are two Lionel 40 foot flat cars with Allis Chalmers construction equipment. The first flat car has a model 45 motor grader and the second is carrying a model TS-300 motor scraper. Both of those models were made for the National Toy Truck'n and Construction toy show that Toy Trucker and Contractor magazine has each year in Indianapolis. Following the flat cars are three Lionel tank cars and behind them is a K-Line boxcar. And bringing up the rear is a Lionel Union Pacific Ca-4 caboose. The train is being operated with Lionel Legacy. The track is K-Line tubular with O-96 radius curves.

UP steam engine 844 launches The Western Heritage Tour Union Pacific Railroads rolling goodwill ambassador historic steam locomotive No. 844 The Western Heritage Tour will cover four states in 32 days. The tour will cover much of the territory first pioneered by the nations first transcontinental railroad, including participation in the city of Roseville, Calif., Centennial, the Western Pacific Railroad Centennial at Portola, Calif., and the 140th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike in Ogden, Utah. We are very excited to be part of so many celebrations this year, said Steve Lee, UPs manager for operating practices and No. 844s chief engineer. The towns that we are visiting have strong ties to the railroad. No. 844 is the last steam locomotive built for the railroad in 1944 and is one of two operating locomotives that pull special trains for the railroad. Both are based in Cheyenne. Rail fans will be able to follow the trains journey through GPS reports available at UPs Web site, www.uprr.com. Union Pacific is one of the nations largest railroads and serves 23 states in the western two-thirds of the country.

Union Pacific 3985 with Maximum Smoke in HD
The Worlds Largest Operating Steam Locomotive stokes up her big boiler for maximum steam pressure for an eastbound trip to Omaha Nebraska on Sept. 18, 2008 UP 3985 operated in its last "regular" train service in 1957. The locomotive was retired about 1962 and after many years of storage in a roundhouse at Cheyenne, Wyoming. UP 3985 was placed on outdoor display beside the Cheyenne depot in 1975. Beginning in 1979 a group of Union Pacific employee-volunteers started work on overhauling the locomotive, and it was returned to operational condition in 1981. Originally a coal-burner, to prevent lineside grass fires it was successfully converted to oil firing in 1990. Stationed at Cheyenne with other equipment in the UP's heritage collection, it is currently used for excursion trains and occasionally mainline freight on ferry moves. It was in the maintenance shop at Cheyenne in 2007 and underwent necessary repairs for service in 2008. It is now back up and running as of 2008. I was in the US in August 2006, and drove from Washington State to LA. We spent a lot of time on Route 97, where we recorded this video. The UP train is south bound, the AMTRACK train northbound. Thanks to everyone who responded below. One post suggested near the border of OR and CA - so they win the prize. Google Earth provided a sat pic, and a map. These confirm my memories from the trip - it is Dorris California. The video was shot from East 1st Street looking north to the tunnel!

Union Pacific E-Units 2006 St. Louis Visit
In 2006, the Union Pacific E9 ABA set 949, 963b and 951 visited St. Louis. I herd about it from a very reliable source who lives in St. Clair County, IL. Kelly Dunlap, Scott Bauer and Myself went over to WR Tower, caught the train there, then went over IL Rt. 3, then got it backing into St. Louis Union Station. The last car on the train is inspection car "Idaho" Video #50 for me!

In 1982, the Western Pacific system, including the Feather River Canyon route, was purchased by the Union Pacific. Improvements began immediately to facilitate increased traffic. A brief 9 years later, Pentrex set out to capture the variety and volume of trains now flowing over this famous pass across California's scenic Sierra Nevadas. Union Pacific's Triple Track Main (DVD video) The Kearney Sub Travel with Pentrex to the busiest freight mainline in North America. Union Pacifics Kearney Subdivision lies in the heart of central Nebraska. The 110-mile portion from North Platte to Gibbon Junction can see an average of 100 trains a day. In 1999, Union Pacific completed construction of a third main track to ease the congestion. Pentrex cameras captured some awesome railroading action here, including many meets and passes. This is Class One railroading at its best! Many different types of trains can be seen rolling across the sand hills and between farm fields. We take some extra time to view trains rounding Buttermilk Curve, which is the best spot for watching trains on the line. Coal shipments are a big reason for the increase in traffic on the Kearney Sub. But with the worlds largest classification yard at the west end of the line in North Platte, many other freights traverse the triple track main as well. Ninety-two different trains are captured running along the triple track with all kinds of motive power utilized, including distributed power coal trains. Union Pacific's Cornhusker Mainline (The Triple Track)
The Council Bluffs Subdivision of the Union Pacific Railroad is the busiest main line in North America. It is also home to the largest railroad classification yard in the world! C. Vision tours a portion of the Sub starting at Bailey Yard in North Platte, Nebraska. From there we move east along the line, viewing many runbys through the Sandhills region, and onto the vast cornfields of Nebraska. The video concludes in Grand Island at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe's flyover. There, we view movement on both the Union Pacific and the BNSF Ravenna Subdivision, which moves mostly Wyoming coal. There are no excursions planned at this time. A detailed schedule will be available in July that will outline the route No. 3985 will take on its way to St. Paul and the route it will take returning to its home base in Cheyenne.

Union Pacific SD40-2 Blows Dynamic Brake Fan
This Video was shot by my friend Tony Johnson on May 24, 1991 and here is the story on this video in his words. "I as filming UP action there when I head this westbound approach with a sick horn. Right after the engineer blows for the road crossing, the dynamic brakes on UP3582 blows sky high with a loud bang. In the video I said "it looks like it blew it's turdocharger", but as UP3582 rolled past me I could see a hole and fire inside the dynamic brake grid with sparks and molten metal falling onto the walkway. I mentioned that I thought the crew would call the fire department, but they didn't. I drove two miles itto Cozad and found the same UP local switching a local customer as if nothing had happen. the fire was out and the unit sounded normal. At the time UP were running their trains like streetcars on the double track mainline. I was surprised when the UP dispatcher allowed the local to get back on the main line and continue west, which i also photographed. The train got about five miles out of town and UP3582 died on the main, tying up everything. The UP dispatcher was not pleased ."
