Cell Biology: The Plasma Membrane (clip)
The processes of diffusion, osmosis, active transport and endocytosis are shown as the primary means of transferring molecules to and from cells through the membrane, providing needed chemical reactions, maintaining a stable interior environment and allowing a way for electronic signals to be passed to other cells—all necessary to sustain life. Produced by Bill Walker Productions in association with BioMedia Associates. A Coronet release. Bronze, Columbus International Film Festival Grade Levels: 9 to 12 15 minutes, color. Bruce Lipton - Biology of Perception (1 of 7)
Physician, author and research scientist Dr. Bruce Lipton discusses the processes by which cells receive information to prove that genes and DNA do not control our biology; that instead DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the energetic messages emanating from our positive and negative thoughts. Dr. Lipton's profoundly hopeful synthesis of the latest and best research in cell biology and quantum physics shows that our bodies can be changed as we retrain our thinking. A cell biologist by training, Lipton taught Cell Biology at the University of Wisconsins School of Medicine, and later performed pioneering studies at Stanford Universitys School of Medicine. Sickle Cell
"Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disease that affects hemoglobin, the oxygen transport molecule in the blood. The disease gets its name from the shape of the red blood cells under low oxygen conditions. Some red blood cells become sickle-shaped and these elongated cells get stuck in small blood vessels so that parts of the body don't get the oxygen they need. Sickle cell anemia is caused by a single letter change in the DNA. This in turn alters one of the amino acids in the hemoglobin protein. Valine sits in a position where glutamic acid should be. The valine makes the hemoglobin molecules stick together when oxygen tension is low, forming long fibers that distort the shape of the red blood cells, and this brings on an attack." biology - nuclear transfer (clone creating)
Nuclear Transfer is a form of cloning. The steps involve removing the DNA from an oocyte and while(unfertilized egg), and injecting the nucleus which contains the DNA to be cloned. In rare instances, the newly constructed cell will divide normally, replicating the new DNA while remaining in a pluripotent state. If the cloned cells are placed in the uterus of a female mammal, a cloned organism develops to term in rare instances. This is how Dolly the Sheep and many other species were cloned. Alternatively, if cells are extracted from the cloned cells during very early embryonic stages (blastocyst or morula), embryonic stem cells can be created. These cells can be grown in laboratories indefinitely and can theoretically be made into any of the 200+ cell types in the mammalian body, and thus are an extraordinary tool for biologists as well as a therapeutic agent with the potential to treat currently untreatable medical conditions.

Documentary - Cell Biology (3/4)
In the one and a half centuries that have passed since Darwins day, giant steps have been taken in science and technology. Scientists discovered the structure of the cell. They saw with surprise that the cell has a system so complex as to have been unimaginable in Darwins time. This great documentary reveals this design in the cell with sophisticated computer graphics.

BUILD IT - LEGO Music Video
Build it, is an animated LEGO Music video Remove unnecessary risk from your T cell research without sacrificing results. This animation tells the story of an immunologist in the lab I was commissioned to create for a global biotechnology tools company called invitrogen in July 2008. invitrogen supplied the specially created music, and asked me to create a light hearted music video that tells the story of an immunologist in the lab Zealous Build it The Building Blocks of Cell Biology Invitrogen-The Cell Biology Company Directed by Nate Burr (Blunty3000) For those wondering, this was the first time I used a MAC to animate with LEGO (previously my workflow for stopmotion was all done on a PC, even well after I switched) the animation was created on my macbook using iStopmotion and a JVC miniDV camera hooked up via firewire. To anyone thinking about doing this kind of stuff, I heartily recommend iStopMotion, it's a brilliant piece of software, and MUCH more powerful, flexible and advanced to the tools I was using on my WinXP machine (on which I created vids like the viral hit Circle Circle Dot Do), and allowed me to work in true widescreen for the first time instead of cropping an image from a 4:3 webcam has I did for the widescreen animated series Meatspace.

Biology: Mitosis: An Overview
www.mindbites.com Mitosis seems to be a sticking point for many biology students. In this lesson, Professor Wolfe simplifies the concept of mitosis by breaking it down into the functions and forgoing the vocabulary (for the time being). He begins with a review of the eukaryotic cell cycle. DNA is only packed into chromosomes when a cell is going to do mitosis. A chromosome is two identical strands of DNA connected by a centromere. The centromere includes a section called the kinetochore. During mitosis, the nucleus of the cell splits and then the chromosomes form. The mictrotubiles connect to the kinetochrome and allow for chromosomal movement and division. Taught by Professor George Wolfe, this lesson was selected from a broader, comprehensive course, Biology. This course and others are available from Thinkwell, Inc. The full course can be found at www.thinkwell.com The full course covers evolution, ecology, inorganic and organic chemistry, cell biology, respiration, molecular genetics, photosynthesis, biotechnology, cell reproduction, Mendelian genetics and mutation, population genetics and mutation, animal systems and homeostasis, evolution of life on earth, and plant systems and homeostasis. Founded in 1997, Thinkwell has succeeded in creating "next-generation" textbooks that help students learn and teachers teach. Capitalizing on the power of new technology, Thinkwell products prepare students more effectively for their coursework than any printed textbook can ...

Chromatin
"In this animation we'll see the way our DNA is tightly packed up to fit into the nucleus of every cell. The process starts with assembly of a nucleosome, which is formed when eight separate histone protein subunits attach to the DNA molecule. The combined tight loop of DNA and protein is the nucleosome. Six nucleosomes are coiled together and these then stack on top of each other. The end result is a fiber of packed nucleosomes known as chromatin."
