Joy Division CONTROL film Q & A with Anton Corbijn
Music by Toronto composer Ibrahim. See details below. The North American debut of director Anton Corbijn's film CONTROL took place at the Toronto International Film Festival, September 2007. The film tells the story of Ian Curtis, the enigmatic singer from Joy Division who committed suicide at the age of 23 just as the band was starting to gain a new level of popularity in 1980. Sam Riley's incredible performance as Ian brings to life Ian's lyrics which, in retrospect, were quite autobiographical, touching on his battles with epilepsy, the pressures of marrying and being a father at an early age and the guilt of carrying on an adulterous love affair. Aldo Erdic from ToBeScene was at the premiere screening to record the question and answer session with Anton Corbijn, Sam Riley and Alexandra Maria Lara who played Annik Honoré, Ian's mistress. THE THIRD MAN theme - Anton Karas (HQ + ending)
The Third Man (1949) is a classic thriller directed by Carol Reed. Developed by Graham Greene from an idea jotted down on the flap of an envelope, this virtually flawless thriller is one of the best British films of all time. Set in postwar occupied Vienna, the plot is a corker, littered with memorable moments and played to perfection by an unforgettable cast that's led with distinction by Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten. A master of place, angle and shade, director Carol Reed (helped by his Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Krasker) fashions a city in which menace lurks around every corner, while Anton Karas's jaunty zither music uniquely echoes the wit and drama of this dark yet daringly playful picture. The musical score was composed by Anton Karas and played by him on the zither. Before the production came to Vienna, Karas was an unknown wine bar performer. According to a November 1949 Time magazine article: "The picture demanded music appropriate to post-World War II Vienna, but director Reed had made up his mind to avoid schmalzy, heavily orchestrated waltzes. In Vienna one night Reed listened to a wine-garden zitherist named Anton Karas, [and] was fascinated by the jangling melancholy of his music."

Latvian National Opera - Anton Rubinstein „The Demon"
In the 19th century Anton Rubinstein (1829 -1894) was referred to as the outstanding piano virtuoso amongst the composers of the time and the most outstanding composer amongst the piano virtuosos of the time. In Riga, Rubinstein performend since the age of 15. The total number of concerts given in Riga also reaching 15, he elicited immense admiration inhis listenersand earned his nickname Anton-the-first-in-the-field-of-piano. In his concert of 29 January 1880, during his last visit to Riga, he won the audiences acclaim by also performing ballet music fragments from his most successful opera „The Demon". Eyewitnesses found difficult to describe the exaltation generated by Anton Rubinsteins apperarances in Riga. The Stage Director Andrejs Žagars, Conductor Normunds Vaicis, Set and Costume Designer Ieva Kauliņa and Lighting Designer Reinhard Bichsel are presenting a new production of this significant work of Russian romantic music, so frequently staged previosly. One of the reasons for reverting to Anton Rubinsteins „The Demon", is to be found in the necessity to enrich the operas basic repertoire with works that allow us to have a more comprehensive and thorough insight into the nature of the lost time and the era or Romanticism. The second reason is quite simple and relevant to universal subjects, ie „The Demon" is a story about passion, solitude of the soul and the last desperate attempt to love. This is a message about the struggle of good and evil that has taken place ...

"Control" The First 10 Minutes
Part of my First & Last 10 Minute tribute to GREAT film. Control is a 2007 film, directed by Dutch director Anton Corbijn. The black-and-white film is a biopic about the late Ian Curtis (1956-1980), lead singer of post-punk band Joy Division. The screenplay written by Matt Greenhalgh is based on the book Touching from a Distance, by Curtis's widow, Deborah, who is also a co-producer of the film. The film details the life of the troubled young musician, who forged a new kind of music out of the punk rock scene of the United Kingdom in the 1970s, and the band Joy Division, which he headed from 1977 to 1980. It also deals with his rocky marriage and extra-marital affairs, as well as his increasingly frequent seizures, which were thought to contribute to the circumstances leading to his suicide on the eve of Joy Division's first US tour. The title is a reference to the Joy Division song, "She's Lost Control" — believed to be a reference to an epileptic client befriended by Curtis while employed at a Job Centre in Manchester, who later died during a seizure. Angelus Septentrio: Deconstructing an Angel by Anton Hecht and Kevin Cadwallender
Angelus Septentrio is of the second variety. The film dictated that. The process began after the first phonecall from the films director Anton Hecht. I started a notebook, copying down what I thought of the Angel, bits of research that I had done on the internet and generally anything I thought would be useful. Nothing formed. At this stage I had no idea of a title but was translating some Catallus poems from the Latin and thought a Latin title might add to the gravitas of the piece, and anyway the title had to be a discussion piece in itself. Not a literal translation, Septentrio is the seven stars of The Great Bear in the Northern Sky and thus a general representation of Northern rather than North, and even Angelus is not the only way Angel could be rendered.

In 2004, Ondi Timoner released her award-winning documentary Dig! that followed the lives and careers of the bands The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols for seven years. Anton has denounced his depiction in the film that propelled him further into the public spotlight. As the founder and the only continual member of The BJM, he is well-versed in more than eighty instruments and equally competent at producing and running record labels. His musical prodigy and his influence on the current music climate cannot be denied. In this episode of Rehearsal Space, Anton talks about the process of making the BJM's ninth studio album, My Bloody Underground. He explains how his non-music interests lead him to use multimedia in his art; for example, they're releasing a video piece to go with every song on the album. Finally, Anton shares his opinions on the subjects of free music, criticism, and songs as performance art.
