Their duet on "If This World Were Mine" was wonderful, one of the few that came close to rivaling the definitive Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell original. Both it and the title cut were big hits, and it seemed Lynn was about to make the breakthrough. But the album itself didn't quite explode, and Lynn just missed reaching the next level on the urban contemporary circuit. _____________________________ Biography by Ron Wynn Perhaps the lone artist who got her start on The Gong Show and remained credible, Cheryl Lynn's searing, often captivating voice and great range were showcased on some marvelous dance hits in the late '70s and early '80s. She signed with Columbia in 1978, and her debut LP Cheryl Lynn featured the anthem "Got To Be Real," which topped the R&B charts and reached number 12 pop. The follow-up, "Star Love," was a Top 20 R&B hit, and Lynn kept things going with "Shake It Up Tonight" in 1981, another Top 10 R&B smash. She teamed brillantly with Luther Vandross for a remake of "If This World Were Mine" in 1982, yet another Top 10 hit, and then Lynn topped the R&B charts in 1983 with "Encore." If you happen to miss this nearly 27 years ago and a few nights ago on that "new network," this is your third chance to catch this special moment that has been for much long been requested. This is Cheryl Lynn performing the Marvin and Tammi remake of "If This World Were Mine" with the late great Luther Vandross in late 1982. This #4 R&B hit is found on her fourth album, Instant Love of which Luther produced for her. At the same time, Luther is enjoying his success of his second album, Forever For Always For Love of which will top the R&B charts in the next month. Although this performance was not as tearjerking as "A House Is Not A Home," its been long requested and I'm glad it did'nt take that much soulsearching to obtain for once. RIP Luther. Toto was an American rock band founded in 1977 by some of the most popular and experienced Los Angeles session musicians of the time. The band enjoyed great commercial success in the 1980s, beginning with the band's self-titled debut, released during 1978. Continuing with 1982's critically acclaimed and commercially successful "Toto IV", Toto became one of the best-selling music groups of their era. They are known for such hit singles as "Hold The Line", "Rosanna", and "Africa". Although their popularity in the United States diminished in the 1990s and 2000s, they continued to tour to sold-out arenas, clubs and theaters internationally. From their classic debut LP "TOTO". Big during my first year of college in Quebec. Hearing Cheryl Lynn on this as well as the Boz Scaggs "Silk Degrees" vibe made this a favorite of mine. I soon realized the single and album versions faded in, and the 12 release started cold. Thanks, Johnny, for bringing this one to my attention way back when. Anyway, thought I could leave my touch on this and not stray too far from the original, love that bass! I would have called the sound of this as bittersweet back then. It just had this somber vibe about it that was just so sexy slinky, I mean I could see Jessica Rabbit singing this walking towards me.....
